Our story

Sir David McMurtry

Sir David McMurtry

10 years ago, Sir David McMurtry began the search for a young engineer to join him as co-founder of a company that would go on to challenge everything we thought a car is capable of.

He head hunted Thomas Yates from Mercedes High Performance Powertrains who was working on Lewis Hamiltons championship winning F1 hybrid engine programme. Thomas became managing director and driving force for McMurtry Automotive as we know it today.

Kevin-Ukoko-Rongione

Kevin Ukoko-Rongione, as Technical Director, joined forces with founder Thomas Yates, whom he met at university in 2006. After graduating, Kevin went on to work at Williams Advanced Engineering, bringing world-class vehicle engineering expertise to the venture.

Together, Thomas and Kevin founded this new British automotive company in 2016 under the guidance and vision of Sir David McMurtry.

Sir David’s influence on engineering and global manufacturing spanned more than six decades, defined by pioneering new technologies.

His most notable invention, the touch trigger probe, transformed precision measurement and remains fundamental to high-accuracy manufacturing worldwide.

The commercial success of this innovation enabled Sir David to establish McMurtry Automotive, which today employs 80 people across two sites in the Cotswolds, UK.

Goodwood Festival of Speed, 26th June 2022

No one expected this.

The original Speirling beat automotive giants to claim the outright hillclimb record on a global stage.

Surpassing F1 and Pikes Peak winning vehicles, this introduced the world to the true potential of this 21st century fan car.

Upside Down Driving, 10th April 2025

The ultimate demonstration of downforce-on-demand in a world first.

Using record setting grip to instead hold and drive the car on the ‘ceiling’.

Our slowest record yet.   A remarkable feat of British engineering, driven by Thomas Yates.

Top Gear Test Track, 11th April 2025

Surpassing child hood dreams.

Corners Chicago, Hammerhead and Follow Through are etched into memory of many car enthusiasts.

The world famous figure of 8 race track was long ruled by a Renault R24 F1 car, until the Spéirling became the fastest ever, by 3.1s!

Amplified adrenaline, agility and acceleration.

There’s not a car on the planet with both power and downforce on the flick of a switch.
  • Sounds like a jet but can run on ‘normal noise’ track days.
  • No engine, gearbox or tyre preheat necessary
  • It’s recommended to bring one friend or technician to help with pit lane tasks.

McMurtry are curating fully supported international driving events at prestigious venues

  • The cars are also eligible for competition in events such as Global Time Attack at COTA, USA, European Time Attack Masters at the Nurburgring and the Speed Classic Hillclimb in South Africa
  • Non-competitive but race inspired events such as ‘GT1 Sports Club’ are also recommended.
