Q: What if your Downforce-on-demand system is too powerful for the belt in a normal wind tunnel?
A: Find a private actual tunnel with near perfect conditions and run the real car and all its systems live.
Why
McMurtry design the Spéirling PURE in the virtual wind tunnel using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Its important to ensure the virtual tools correlate to reliable real world numbers.
Getting good correlation between the two means we can design quicker and in more detail, ultimately getting a better car to customers faster.
Aerodynamic efficiency improves lap time, extends overall run time and allows a smaller and lighter battery to be used, which boosts handling.
Aerodynamic stability gives drivers confidence to brake late, attack corners and get onto the throttle earlier than anyone else at the track.
This video introduces a few more engineers from the team as we take these precise aerodynamic measurements at Catesby Tunnel, England.
It’s 2.7km long and perfectly straight. It’s only 30 mins from Silverstone, but with no wind, no rain (or ice!), no traffic and no bumps, Catesby Tunnel is a much more controlled environment to conduct aero testing.
*(It also has some epic tunnel run clips where test driver Max said 160mph in there felt like 240mph around Indy!)*
