Monterey Car Week – the rather well publicised automotive gathering in California – was a particularly monumental moment in the ten-year history of McMurtry Automotive, seeing the global debut of the production-form Spéirling PURE fan car.
You’re likely familiar with the Spéirling prototype, have watched them set unbroken records at Goodwood and the Top Gear Test Track – not that you needed reminding – and have seen them drive upside-down and right-side up at some of the most famous race tracks in the world.

Now in production form, the Spéirling PURE represents the culmination of relentless research and development to produce a hyper track car that comprises 95% new components compared to prototype models. Delivering truly accessible F1-level performance that any driver can enjoy, there’s a strong focus on a plug-and-play ownership experience.

The first stop on the Californian tour for the production-ready Spéirling PURE – finished in appropriately coloured ‘Monterey Green’ – was Canepa in Scotts Valley, California – a high-end car dealership, museum and restoration shop owned and run by former racing driver Bruce Canepa, who first met the team when McMurtry was setting the Laguna Seca Reverse Hillclimb Record back in 2024.
During an open day at Canepa, enthusiasts and customers travelled from far and wide to get a first glimpse of the production car and attend a talk by McMurtry co-founder and Managing Director, Thomas Yates, on the car’s journey from prototype to production.

From there, the Spéirling PURE headed south across Monterey Bay to Carmel for Miller Motor Cars’ exclusive gathering at L’Auberge Carmel. Parked in prime position on the private street among automotive royalty, the Spéirling PURE had little trouble attracting a rather large crowd. New fans were made as many more admirers had the opportunity to sit inside the all-new cockpit and take in the production car’s new bodywork and proportions.

Then it was time for the big one: The Quail as the pinnacle of Monterey Car Week. The McMurtry team was out in full force, donning their freshly-pressed jackets for the 23rd edition of an unmissable event on the global automotive calendar.
Displayed alongside other global manufacturers’ latest offerings and automotive icons from across the decades, the team welcomed thousands of visitors to the McMurtry stand as they laid eyes on the Spéirling PURE for the first time.

Automotive leaders, Quail patrons, McMurtry customers and media friends learned more about the brand, its cutting-edge technology, plus more juicy details about the new car.

And the fun didn’t stop there… Last but not least, the Spéirling PURE headed to Laguna Seca Raceway for Monterey Motorsports Reunion. As a spiritual home of fan car technology, the Chaparral 2J – the first car to ever deploy fan-based downforce – raced at Laguna Seca back in 1970, making the Spéirling PURE’s presence rather poignant.
While racing cars from all eras howled down through the famous Corkscrew, McMurtry made camp in the paddock next to the 2025 Indy 500-winning car, welcoming waves of fresh visitors who were drawn to the Spéirling PURE’s unmistakable silhouette.

Thomas Yates, McMurtry co-founder and Managing Director, comments: ”Wow. What a debut for the production-form Spéirling PURE. Monterey Car Week 2026 was a genuine milestone in McMurtry’s history. It was the week in which we presented the final product of a decade of work, realised by an extremely talented and dedicated team back at our headquarters in the Cotswolds, England.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better reception. We’re still floored by the reactions of people seeing the car for the first time. I’m also not sure it would have been possible to present the car to a higher number of passionate and knowledgeable people in such a short space of time, but the team managed it.
“Next year, we cannot wait to bring multiple Spéirling PUREs back to America with customer cars running, demonstrate the mind-bending performance potential of this platform, and maybe see them set a record or two in the process.”

First customer deliveries begin later in 2026. No more than 100 examples of the Spéirling PURE will be made. For more information, please visit mcmurtry.com.

About McMurtry:
McMurtry Automotive is a UK-based manufacturer, co-founded in 2016 by the late engineering pioneer, Sir David McMurtry, and ex-Formula 1 engineer, Thomas Yates.
With a clear vision to design and build vehicles that deliver the highest levels of exhilaration and performance, the McMurtry team continues to leverage its unique engineering creativity to work outside of established industry norms to create a track vehicle unlike anything else in the automotive world.
The Spéirling PURE is a single-seater, electric hyper track car that delivers truly accessible Formula 1-level performance. Centring around McMurtry’s fan-based Downforce-on-DemandTM system, it generates 2000kg of downforce, available at 0mph. A 100kWh Lithium-Ion battery produces 1000bhp, launching the car from 0-60mph in 1.55 seconds, and on to 190mph.
Small, lightweight and supremely agile, the Spéirling PURE empowers drivers of all levels to experience forces that were once only accessible to elite-level racing drivers, pulling 3g in the corners and 3g under braking. Prototype Spéirling models have proven their speed, shattering outright records at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb and the Top Gear Test Track.
Designed with ease of ownership in mind, the Spéirling PURE is plug-and-play, and can be enjoyed with the bare minimum of trackside support with just a driver and competent friend.
